Guess the VGM Sheet (with almost no information)! :D
« on: April 16, 2020, 10:07:03 PM »
Guess the VGM Sheet!
(with basically no information about it)

An idea, flagrantly ripped off from the wonderful Insig and his introduction to this music-nerdy game from some music-nerdy Facebook page,
which I absolutely love because I'm a music nerd myself.

Click here to view the Brownie Points Table!

Taking part!
This contest will take place in tranches of five days, with three questions set each day!
(...because yknow, that's how i work, sorry guys ;w;)

You'll just have to guess what it is by dropping me a DM on Discord or a PM on the forums.

Scoring!
If you get it right, you get 2 points,
and if you get it wrong (or just send in anything really), that's 0.5 points!

In addition, I present to you the “bor rule”: if you send in an answer that is interesting and kinda-similar, you get 1 point! ^^ Also, your special answer will probably be featured.

Other things to note!
Note that the snippets aren't necessarily from the beginning of the sheet, but I'll let yall know the clef and key (sharps/flats)!

Pick up the @Quizmasters role on Discord to be notified of new questions! ^^

...oh, what do points do, you ask? Well...

The Brownie Points Hall of Fame!
(because this event is really too dumb to grant roles, but hey you get a feature if you reach a certain number ;w;)

~
Total Score Awards!

You're a VGM Nerd (TM) too?? (15 points):
Lat, Doug, Insig, Cabbage, Linckchu, ADW, Bor!

What are you doing with your life oh my (30 points):

Now you may consider calling yourself a "musician", BUT AT WHAT COST (50 points):
(none yet)

I added this because of people like you and you might persuade me to create a role for this (100 points):
(none yet)

~
Tranche Awards!

how even (20 points or more in a single tranche):

Round 1! FIGHT!
(ok jk dont just send me your answers haha)

edit: i realise how impossible this is without telling you guys the key of each extract haha. thanks for pointing out doug and lat!

- The first one has 4 sharps, you can see that;
- The second one has four sharps too, it's in E major, and it's in treble clef!
- The last one has two sharps, it's in B minor, and it's in the treble clef too.

ROUND 1: We make mistakes but we also learn! :,D

So! Lat got all three of them without even seeing the extra information (how even man), while Doug, Insig and Linkchu got the last one! Congrats for your brownie points ehehe.

The answers were:
1: The beginning of "Union Cave"/"Ruins of Alph" from Pokemon GSC (arr. Gav!)
2: "Super Smash Bros. Brawl Main Theme", that run from the introduction (arr. me!)
3: The first chord of "Champion Cynthia" from Pokemon DPPt! (also arr. Gav!)

I've now learnt my mistake, and Round 2 will feature a wider range of difficulties xD
(so as to make it less esoteric and more fun for everyone! ^^)

Also! From now, I will state the franchise that all these extracts are from, to give you guys a better chance at guessing them ^^

For this round, all the extracts are from the Pokemon main games!
(we'll start with the comfortable stuff and try around hehe)

Same drill! DM me on Discord or on the forums with your guesses guys, and enjoy!! ^^

ROUND TWO BE DONES! yey

We had a lot more participants this round, yay! ^^ So yep, I definitely admit now that the first round was super cryptic.
Thank you to everyone who participated!

THE ANSWERS FOR THIS ROUND WERE!
1. "Iki Town (Night)", from Pokemon SM, arranged by braix
2. "Pokemon League (Day)", from Pokemon DPPt, arranged by QWERTYkid (from ninsheetmusic!)
3. "Eterna City", from Pokemon DPPt, arranged by me! :D

Every single participant managed to get Iki Town, so massive congrats on that!

The "Pokemon League" excerpt was from the transition between the A and B sections of the piece, and I thought it was a very distinctive chord progression that most people would have at least some idea of.

Bor, before he found this answer, guessed that it was the Frontier Brain Battle Theme from the Hoenn games, leading to the genesis of the new "bor rule" (see the OP!). That's a really interesting answer, because the opening of the Frontier Brain Theme uses a descending chromatic melody + parallel progression just like in the Pokemon League track. However, that theme is an octave higher, and it uses augmented chords. Still a really interesting answer, and it's a bit unfortunate that bor figured out the answer and could not rely on his own rule ;w;

Finally, the "Eterna City" excerpt was also from the middle. I'll admit that most arrangements don't see this as a change from 4/4 swing to 12/8, and this is a personal arrangement choice that's theoretically cleaner to me (if you'd like a shot at this, try to notice the accents changing from every strong beat to every first and third beats in the original track!). But the Ab diminished chord would be a giveaway to anyone who's listened to the track enough, because very very few Pokemon tracks use corny diminished harmony.

BUT! With that out of the way let's do round 3!!

THIS ROUND, ALL TRACKS ARE FROM THE PMD GAMES :D

A few changes for Round 3! First, I've finally decided on the format of this competition. It'll work in tranches of five questions, with one question each day, and if you didn't manage to answer the first question this time, you will be granted 1.5 points as if you tried to take a turn.

This is because I work in little spurts of passionate energy, and I think 5 is a nice number. Nothing much more ;w;

Additionally, the score sheet has been cleaned up, so do give that a look!

ALL THE BEST FOR ROUND 3 GUYSSSSS

ROUND THREE BE OVAR

ANSWERS WAS
#1: "Monster House" (from PMD1) (arr. Bespinben)!
#2: "Beach Cave" (from PMD2) (arr. 592)!
#3: "Tree of Life: Roots" (from PSMD) (arr. Insig and Braix)!

Most of the participants this round got everything right! Strangely, "Beach Cave" was the most commonly-guessed one, even though I gave way less information for that than "Monster House". I guess everyone here played PMD2 xD

"Tree of Life: Roots" was admittedly quite a slimy choice, because as beautiful as it is, I never played PSMD and would not have known it existed if not for braix introducing it to me. But hey, most people found it out (and yes, all methods are permissible!).

It's interesting to me that the PMD round was easier than the Pokemon round, so! Here's another Pokemon round.

ROUND FOAR TIS BE ALL POKEMON MAIN GAMES TOO!

All the best everyone! ^^

ohoho round foar me no boar

The answers were!
#1: "Mt. Coronet" (from Pokemon DPPt) (arr. Bespinben)
#2: "Veilstone City (from Pokemon DPPt) (arr. me)
#3: "Old Chateau" (from Pokemon DPPt) (arr. Seb)

This round was a little harder! Most of the participants who attempted this got all the questions right.

Funny enough, I didn't intend for all these tracks to be from DPPt, but hey. Tis cool.

WELL NOW TIS BE THE LAST NON-BONUS ROUND!

Blast to the past! This round's all about the classic Mario games!
(and nope, I did not pick something a bit wacky just to stump Lat, who is on the way to getting the trache perfect score achievement!!)

RoUnD FAIV done!!

The answers were!
#1: "Ground Theme"/The Mario theme everyone knows (arr. Static!)
#2: "Ending" (from the OG Super Mario!) (arr. Deku)
#3: "Athletic" (from SMB3) (arr. Bespinben)

Anyone who did not get the first track... I have very little to say, though I realised today that I'm not very good at these quizzes myself xD

I think the other two options were pretty easy if you knew them! Shoutout to Cabbage for getting the Galaxy remake of the "Athletic" theme too ^^

AND THE RESULTS OF THIS TRANCHE ARE IN!

Congrats to our one and only CHEATER, Latios212!! Truly breaking my game.

AND ALSO CONGRATS to Doug, Insig, Cabbage and Linkchu for getting your Champ titles!

FINALLY!! BONUS ROUND!!!1!!!!11
Here are three pretty wacky questions!

Getting 1 right gets you 2 points, getting 2 gets you 5, getting 3 gets you 10!
These will not go to your tranche score, but will go to your total scores.

All these be from Pokemon main games!! Bwahaha.
